Bike Safety

Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. A head injury can mean brain injury. That's why it's so important to wear your bike helmet.

Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. Your helmet should have a sticker that says it meets standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Wear a bike helmet every time you ride, even if you are going for a short ride.

Your bike helmet should fit you properly. Never wear a hat under your bike helmet. If you're unsure if your helmet fits you well, ask someone at a bike store.

If the straps are flying, it's likely to fall off your head when you need it most. Take care of your bike helmet and don't throw it around. Many bike helmets today are lightweight and come in cool colors.

Motorcycle Helmet Tips

Executive summary about A Helmet by MrFurious

There are essentially four types:

a. Full Face Helmet: This is the type of helmet that you see serious riders wear.

b. 3/4 Helmet: Very similar to a Full face helmet, a 3/4 Helmet doesn't provide as much protection against the wind and such, and not as good in case of an accident.

c. Shorty: A shorty is essentially what you see motorcycle cops wear.

d. Skull cap: the Harley Davidson style helmet. Practically useless.

Most modern helmets are constructed out of space age materials like fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber. Check whether the helmet was approved by DOT (Department of Transport), SNELL (The Snell Memorial Foundation) or by the ANSI institute. If it has one or both seals of approval you're good to go. When trying on a helmet here are few things to remember:

1. Cheek pads should touch cheeks without pressing uncomfortably.

2. There should be no gap between forehead and helmet.

Consider getting a lighter helmet when you go for extended rides. Most motorcycle helmets are designed for one fall only. If you drop the helmet hard enough, it might be useless in an actual accident.

Wear your safey gear and stay safe!
